How to Manage Distractions when Studying at Home

Administration / 9 Sep, 2023

Our Top Tips for Studying at Home (undistracted):

1. Take breaks:

Very few students can study for several hours on end (you’re not a robot!) – taking regular breaks throughout the day can help reduce distractions and keep you motivated. Try setting a timer for 50 minutes and take a 10-minute break in between.

2. Find a quite place:
Find a space in your home that is quiet and conducive to studying. This can help you stay focused and minimise distractions. Staying in one place works for some whilst others prefer to study 1-2 hours in one location before switching to another study setting.

3. Limit Technology:
Try to limit your use of technology while studying. If possible, turn off all notifications and disable Wi-Fi (aeroplane mode ✈️) while you’re studying. ‘Out of sight, out of mind’ – that’s the catchy phrase we tell our students to say to themselves to ensure they hide their phone before the start of a revision session.

4. Avoid Multitasking:
Multitasking can be a major distraction. Try to focus on one task at a time and finish it before moving on to the next one.

5. Set Goals:
Setting goals and breaking them down into smaller tasks can help you stay on track and reduce distractions. Using a notepad to jot these tasks done in bullet points and then satisfyingly (💆🏽‍♀️) ticking each as you complete them is worth a try!

6. Use Study aids:
Use study aids such as flashcards, concept maps, and study guides to help you stay focused and organised.

7. Make a plan:

Make a plan for each day and stick to it. This can help you stay on track and reduce the urge to procrastinate. A best-fit tutor can provide that extra help & guidance!

8. Reward yourself:

Celebrate your successes, even if they’re small. This can help keep you motivated and reduce distractions.

The key to remaining focused when studying may vary between students. Trying out different tips will help you and you will eventually find some that work for yourself specifically. Don’t feel discouraged if you haven’t found the winning formula for what works yet. Stay positive and keep trying new techniques and see what helps.

Learning how to avoid distractions while studying is crucial and can help you to gain a clearer understanding of the content that you’re studying. Using the tips that we’ve outlined here is a great way to keep your focus on studying and truly gain an understanding of a subject.
