📚 My Approach to Teaching Maths 📚

I truly believe every student has the ability to achieve the highest grades in Maths. I will detail the 3 steps it comes down to and how I contribute in helping your child in achieving these grades:

1) An Intuitive Understanding 🧠:
It's often said "one doesn't understand Mathematics, one simply gets used to it", and as a soon to be 4th year Masters in Maths student, I have gotten very used to all kinds of maths, and especially am able to uniquely explain and simplify every concept in A-Level and SQA Higher Maths and provide the Intuitive understanding necessary to work on any problem.

2) Spaced-Repetition and Active Recall ⏳:
During our lessons I will provide a question from a topic we covered a few weeks ago so that the student gains long-term memory of that topic. I will also set flashcards, that I have created, for the student to learn as homework each week and this is proven to significantly improve understanding and make concepts stick in the long-term.

3) Exam-style Practise ✏:
Maths is all about problem-solving, and the most efficient way for a student to practise this essential skill and gain the highest marks, is through practising with Exam-style questions. During our lessons I provide these questions in an order that will build their understanding and confidence in the topic.

📜 Inside the Lesson 📜

0) We go through a question from the previous lesson (spaced repetition)

1) Ask the student what they know about the topic (blurting technique - a form of Active Recall)

2) Cover the gaps in knowledge and building an intuitive understanding of the topic for the student.

3) Work through a variety of exam-style questions on that topic starting simple and then building to complex questions.

4) 3 minute summary at the end detailing the key points covered in the lesson and important problem-solving ideas from the questions.

📚 Outside the Lesson 📚

1) Homework will be set only on concepts I believe need consistent practise on, for example Indices or Surds laws. These repetitive style questions are better completed outside of lesson time so that our lessons can remain engaging and productive.

2) Flashcards - these will be the main form of consistent "homework" I ask from the student. Per week it'll be about 20 flashcards taking around ~1 hour to complete.
