Denise buys 5 apples and 3 bananas for £3.15. A banana costs 25p more than an apple. How much would it cost to buy 4 apples and 2 bananas?

Question:

Denise buys 5 apples and 3 bananas for £3.15. A banana costs 25p more than an apple. How much would it cost to buy 4 apples and 2 bananas?

Methods:

Apple costs: 30p

Banana costs: 55p

Answer should be calculated by first interpreting the question to form two simultaneous equations. These can be solved by either substitution or elimination (substitution easier in this situation). The solutions are then interpreted back into the context to calculate the final answer.

Answer:
