Rationalise the denominator of 2/(3-sqrt(2))

Question:

Rationalise the denominator of 2/(3-sqrt(2))

Methods:

First, rationalise the denominator by multiplying the top and bottom of the fraction by the conjugate of the denominator.

(2/ (3-sqrt (2)))

((3+sqrt (2))/ (3+sqrt (2)))

Next, expand the brackets – notice there will be a difference of two squares on the bottom of the fraction.

(6+(2sqrt (2)))/ (9-2)

Finally, simplify your answer.

Answer:

(6+2(sqrt (2)))/7
