The point P has coordinates (3,4). The point Q has coordinates (a, b). A line perpendicular to PQ is given by the equation 3x + 2y = 7. Find an expression for b in terms of a.

Question:

The point P has coordinates (3,4). The point Q has coordinates (a, b). A line perpendicular to PQ is given by the equation 3x + 2y = 7. Find an expression for b in terms of a.

Methods:

y = -3/2x + 7/2gradient = -3/2

gradient of perpendicular = 2/3

y = 2/3x + c

sub in given values of x and y to find c

y = 2/3x + 2

sub in a and b, so:

Answer:

b = 2/3a + 2
